Jumpseed (Persicaria virginiana)
Jumpseed is an herbaceous perennial that typically reaches two to three feet in height. Its flowers are very small, about 1/8 inch long, ranging from white to greenish white, sometimes with a faint pinkish tint. These flowers are spaced along a slender, spike-like raceme that can be four to 16 inches long. The leaves are generally oval with a sharply pointed tip, growing up to seven inches long and four inches wide. They are medium green on the upper surface and a lighter, somewhat silvery green underneath. Jumpseed thrives in rich, moist soils and is most often found in shaded or partially shaded habitats such as woodlands, woodland edges, and thickets. It also grows along riverbanks, rocky slopes, and shaded cliffs, where the soil stays consistently damp.
